Hopkins, Ray O’dell , Lowell Puffenberger. Bottom row: Carl; Berry,
Howard went, Howard McFadden, Bob McFadden.
the picture was taken many years ago when those listed and appearing
in the photo were on The Fostoria Daily Review basketball team,
coached by Ed Hopkins, who at that time was General Manager of the
newspaper. F.M. Hopkins was Publisher and editor.
The only person in the photo known for sure to be still living
is Ray O’Dell. It is not know if Puffenburger is alive or deceased.
All others are deceased.
O’Dell spends winters in Florida and returns to the northern climes
for summer. O’Dell brought the photo to POTLUCK just recently before
going back south, and it is being published in this last edition
of this column prior to “vacation.”
Pix #2 - Ray O’Dell as he appears today.
Vacation time
It’s time to lay aside my pen...cover the typewriter (having already
taken care of some correspondence and other miscellaneous matters)
and get ready for a much needed vacation.
Yes, I have had a vacation in each of the ten years POTLUCK has
been in print, but during those vacation periods I prepared articles
in advance for the time of absence.
Incidentally, I figured more than 900 POTLUCK articles were published
since the column was born.
Last week’s finish of the Wainwright series is three last complete
article until I “get back in the saddle again”, except for any “leftovers”
in this week’s column.
I don not know how soon POTLUCK will be back in print. Never fear,
there is still much to write about. IN fact, some material for articles
is already awaiting my return.
It’s not “goodbye” just “so-long for awhile.”
Dr. Dana Dorsey knew Wainwright
An item that should have appeared in last week’s POTLUCK got lost
but has been recovered, so here it is, better late than never.
At a recent Band Concert at Meadowlark Park, Dr. Dana Dorsey directed
Fostoria City Band in two numbers. After the concert, I made my
way to Dr. Dorsey to congratulate him for the numbers and his direction
of the local musicians.
during our conversation I learned that he had known Jack Wainwright.
I told him about the Wainwright series and he asked to receive a
completed series. They have been sent.
Later, I learned from Ernie Duffield, a member of the Fostoria
Band, that Dorsey had two son, both musicians, playing instruments
in the bands in Fostoria and Fremont.
Dr. Dorsey, a native West Virginia “mountaineer” is a retired music
composer and arranger. He is retired after 36 years of teaching
in the southwest section of W. Va., but is presently teaching music
part-time at Southern West Virginia community college.
He has endeavored to musically depict the characteristics of the
“mountaineer” by folk tunes he has sung or played during his life.
The two musical numbers he directed at Meadowlark Park depicted
the life and characteristics of his home state. the two numbers
he directed were: “West Virginia Centennial Overture” and “Switzerland
of America March.”
Early local history finds its way to me
Recently, Rev. S.B. Reigling, former Fostoria presented to the
Review Times an assembled book of photocopied pages as they were
originally printed, all of the content being early Fostoria history.
The book in turn was turned over to me.
Several years or more ago, I had extracted dates and photos from
one of the original books, and included it in articles. there may
be other data useful for later articles.
Rev. Reidling is the founder and Director of Fellowship of Christ.
His address is P>O. Box 321 Overgard, Arizona, 85933.
The material Reidling presented to the RT was given to him by Allen
Swedenborg, grandson of E.W. Allen, former prominent Fostoria, president
of the Union National Bank (where Trustcorp is now) and an officer
and stockholder in Allen Motor Car Co9. in Fostoria.
Swedenborg is now residing in Wichenburg, Arizona.
Missed more living band members
Cilia Cadwallader called to report Adam Dicken, her brother, who
played under Wainwright, is still living. He and his wife reside
in Louisville, Ky.
Some readers will recall Adam as a clerk in the drug store, once
located in the ground-floor room of the building where Trustcorp
is now located.
I had lost track of the dickens in their moving around in the past
few years.
Another living Wainwright Band member is Ray Cole, 1045 Cory St.,
reported to be by Virginia Schutt, E. Fremont St., Sorry, Ray. Thanks,
Virginia.
