Smothers, Mildred C.

Mildred C. "Mid" Smothers, 88, a resident of Good Shepherd Home in Fostoria and formerly of Bascom, died at 12:32 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004 at Fostoria Community Hospital.

Born May 23, 1916 in Columbus to the late William E. and Edith E. (Walter) Colwell, she married Donald "Slappy" Smothers on Sept. 4, 1937 in Fostoria, and he died Nov. 28, 1987.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Robert (Evelyn) Zepernick, Bascom; two nephews Roger and Kevin Zepernick; five nieces, Carol Thibaut, Barbara Gensler, Elaine Folk, Jeanine Reinbolt and Phyllis Clamfoth; and close friend, Jean Thompson of Bascom.

Two brothers, William and Walter Colwell, one sister, Louise Lintner, and one niece, Laura Younkin, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smothers retired as a secretary from the Bascom Telephone Co., and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fostoria and the Bascom Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening and other yard work and playing cards.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005 in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria, with the Rev. Dr. Larry W. Knigga officiating. Burial will follow in Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria.

Friends are invited to call for one hour prior to the services in the funeral home on Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.


John Shrider

John Junior Shrider, 83, formerly of Fostoria, died at 12:40 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2005 at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.

He was born June 24, 1921 in Fostoria to the late Mirl Claude and Myrtle Marie (Rigby) Shrider. On November 9, 1946 in Napoleon, Ohio he married his loving wife of more than 58 years, Betty J. (Stoddard) Shrider, and she survives in Sandusky.

Other survivors include: three sons, Thomas John Shrider, Bayfield, Wis., Bruce Jay Shrider, Fostoria, and John Mirl Shrider, Glen Jean, W. Va.; one daughter, Susan Jeannine Bahadar, Tiffin; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren.

In 1939 Mr. Shrider graduated from Fostoria High School, where he played football, and later attended Bowling Green State University until enlistment in the Army Air Corps. He served in World War II from Dec. 1941 to Jan. 1946, attaining the rank of Corporal. Mr. Shrider retired as a maintenance electrician from Ford Motor Co., Fostoria, after more than 28 years.

An extremely intelligent, kind-hearted and witty man, he enjoyed classical music, farming, and rebuilding things. In 1973 he and his son built a solar home in Risingsun including design and construction of the solar panels. He was a former member of the Lakota Athletic and Music Booster Clubs.

A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Tiffin, Mr. Shrider was sealed in the Chicago temple for time and eternity on Feb. 26, 1988.

Friends are invited to call from 2-6 P.M. Sunday in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria, where funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 31, 2005. Burial will be in Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, preceded by committal rites in the Veterans Memorial Chapel.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Ohio Veterans Home or to the church missionary fund.


Trevino, Jacinto

Jacinto "Pete" Trevino, 71, Fostoria, died at 9:30 a.m. Sunday Jan. 2, 2005 at Good Shepherd Home, where he had resided for the past 15 years.

He was born Sept. 11, 1933 in Zapata, Texas to the late Tomas and Cenovia (Guzman) Trevino. He married Amalia (Cuellar) Trevino-Frias on Jan. 3, 1953 and they later divorced and she survives in Fostoria.

He is also survived by six sons, Jacinto G. "Chico" (Connie) Trevino, Juan Trevino, Carlos Trevino and Jorge Trevino, all of Fostoria; Tomas Trevino, Dallas, Texas; Eduardo Trevino, Zapata, Texas; two daughters, Marianela (Ricardo) Anez and Patricia (Jamie) Prince, both of Fostoria; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ricardo (Felicidad "Tia Fela") Gallegos, Lima; and Mrs. Tom (Sylvia "Tia Sylvia") Torres, Lima.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jesus Trevino and one sister, Conception Trevino.

Mr. Trevino was a self-employed painter for many area companies. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church and a former volunteer for the Fostoria Sharing Kitchen and former union steward for Kerr-McGee.

Pete was a loving father who will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial is 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, where a Rosary will be prayed at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Wendelin Parish Cemetery, then family and friends are invited to St. Wendelin Parish Hall for a luncheon and gathering.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:45 p.m.

Schmidt, Marilynn Jo

Word has been received of the death of Dr. Marilynn Jo Schmidt, 73, Phoenix, Ariz. and formerly of Fostoria. She died Nov. 29, 2004 in Phoenix, Ariz. .

Funeral services were at the Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church, Boonville, Mo.

Memorials may be made to the Marilynn Schmidt Scholarship Fund for Speech and Hearing, Alzheimer Association or Gideons International in care of William Wood Funeral Home.


Henry J. Tiell

Henry J. Tiell, 96, Senior Towers, Findlay and formerly of Stoner Road, Fostoria, died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at The Heritage House, Findlay.

He was born Dec. 28, 1908 in Seneca County to the late John H. and Matilda (Hammer) Tiell. He married Viola C. Williams on Nov. 26, 1931 in St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Frenchtown and she died Feb. 26, 1997.

He is survived by two sons, John H. Tiell, Findlay; Michael L. (Mary) Tiell, Fostoria; three daughters, Deloris C. Durain, Findlay; Patricia A. Blackburn, Fostoria; Louann (Tim) Sterling, Findlay; 21 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two grandchildren, Michael J. Tiell Jr. and Michael Brooks; five brothers, Frank, George, Albert, Charlie and David Tiell; two sisters; Mary Ann Welly and Rose Reinhart; and an infant brother and sister.

Mr. Tiell retired in 1972 from the Union Carbide, now National Electrical Carbon, Fostoria. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Findlay, and a former member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church where a Rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Tiffin.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hoening Funeral Home where a Christian wake service will be at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.



Thompson, Lois Jean

Lois Jean Thompson, 79, of Fostoria, passed peacefully from this life at 5:39 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005 at her residence.

Born July 11, 1925 in McClure, Ohio to the late John Ralph and Della Mae (Hines) Booth, she married David D. Thompson on Sept. 7, 1946 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and he preceded her in death May 14, 1992.

Mrs. Thompson was a devoted Christian woman whose main goal in life was serving the Lord by helping others. She was a homemaker in every sense, committed to her family and opening her home to many others.

She worked for 21 years in the Bill Glass Prison Ministry as a counselor in the prisons and for City-Wide Crusades throughout the country, giving more than 350 programs.

Mrs. Thompson served her community as a past member of the board of the YMCA and Family Services. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years and was a past president of Westminster Circle of Kings Daughters. She was a deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of High Street United Methodist Church where she was Evangelism Chairperson and assisted with Emmaus Walk.

Mrs. Thompson was a 1943 graduate of McClure High School and a graduate of the International Business College, Ft. Wayne, Ind. Always eager to learn, she took piano lessons at age 57 and learned to swim at age 60.

Survivors include a son, Douglas R. (Linda) Thompson, Bay Village; a daughter, Rebecca L. Tussey, Bryan; five grandchildren, Alison (Will) Ness, Alexander Thompson, Eric Tussey, Jonathan (Amanda) Tussey, and Abigail (Scott) Doust; a great-granddaughter, Kathryn Doust; and a sister, Melva Mae (Brice) O'Daniel, Liberty Center.

One sister, Marceil Rowland, and one brother, Clifford Booth, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005 in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria, with Rev. Jeffrey Waite, Rev. Robert Snyder, and Rev. Lowell Reeder presiding. Burial will follow in Knollcrest Gardens, Arcadia.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Smith, Harry Junior

Harry Junior Smith, 82, formerly of 355 W. CR 173, Fremont, died Friday evening, Jan. 7, 2005 at Parkview Care Center.

He was born in Toledo to the late Harry and Maude (Webb) Smith.

He graduated from Fostoria High School. He married Carol Jean Peterson of Fremont on April 24, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minn. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the ship Osterhaus. Mr. Smith was employed by the Ohio Bell Co. where he worked for 35 year until his retirement in 1979, shortly after he served a short time again with the phone company. He also farmed part time for many years in the Fremont area.

Harry is survived by his wife, Carol; four children, Lowell (Alice) Smith, Corning; Susan Collins, Winston Salem, N.C.; Scott (Kathy) Smith, Findlay; Tim (Mary) Smith, Bettsville; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Harry was a skilled carpenter, building boats as well as many other projects. He was known for being an all-around handyman. Harry attended the Fremont Alliance Church and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch St., Fremont. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made in Harry's name to Fremont Alliance Church.


Trevino, Connie J.

Connie J. Trevino, 48, Fostoria, died at 3:32 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005 at Fostoria Community Hospital.

She was born Oct. 6, 1956 in Marion to Jennings O. and Ester (Jaggers) Knotts and her father survives in Marion. She married Jacinto G. Trevino on Sept. 6, 1975 in Fostoria and he survives.

She is also survived by two daughters, Misty (Shawn) Blaser and Jessica Trevino, both of Fostoria; one son, Jacinto G. Trevino Jr., Fostoria; one grandson, Braiden Blaser; one brother, Kenneth (Julie) Knotts, Marion; and one sister, Jennifer Madison, Massillon.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Mrs. Trevino was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting as a pastime. She also read the Bible daily and appreciated the gift of life and her family. Connie will be dearly missed by her loving family.

Funeral services to celebrate Connie's life are 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the Hoening Funeral Home with Rev. Donald R. Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Fountain Cemetery.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hoening Funeral Home.

Simonis, William F.

William F. "Bill" Simonis, 78, Bradenton, Fla. and formerly of Sycamore and Loudenville, died Dec. 17, 2004 at Bradenton Hospice House.

He was born Dec. 15, 1926 in Tiffin to Cyril and Margarite (Miller) Simonis. He married Phyllis Hussey on Jan. 27, 1945 and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Roger Simonis, Bradenton, Fla.; Michael (Ginny) Simonis, Port Clinton; grandchildren, Chandon Simonis, Upper Arlington; Douglas Simonis, Pickerington; Natalie, Norfolk, Va.; Bernadette, Ravenna; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nan Bodart, Fostoria.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cyril Simonis and Yvonne Hess.

Mr. Simonis was the former owner of Simonis Chevrolet in Sycamore and Loudonville for 20 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of Sycamore American Legion Post #250, Disabled American Veterans and a Shriner. He was a member of the Catholic faith. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Memorial and Masonic services are 2:30 p.m. Jan. 15, 2005 at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation is 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15 at the funeral home.
